The Stockhaar Weimaraner

This is a Weimaraner with the "stockhaar" coat. There were three last Saturday at the Weimaraner Klub breeding show in Weimar, along two longhairs from the same litter.

The coat is stiff and heavier than the shorthaired variety. The new FCI standard doesn't list the stockhaar as a separate variety. They are registered as longhairs.

The owner told me he considers the stockhaar an ideal hunting dog because the coat offers more warmth and protection, but doesn't pick up burrs, etc. as the long coat tends to do.

Note the uncropped tail with thicker hair at the end.

Not only was this a Weimaraner event in Weimar, but the owner's first name is "Weimar."
The common wisdom is that that stockhaar can appear in a mating with a longhair and a shorhaired Weimaraner (as was the case here), but I don't know any other details.

I have recently seen some German Wirehaired Pointers with flat coats that I first mistook for German Shorthaired Pointers. Perhaps there's something similar at work there.

That's also a stockhaar on the picture of the character test on the home page.
